Employment

Employment is crucial because it provides individuals with financial independence, stability, and a sense of purpose.

Employment enables people to contribute to society, develop skills, and pursue personal growth. Beyond these financial benefits, meaningful work cultivates a sense of identity and belonging, particularly for those from marginalised communities like the Global Ethnic Majority (GEM). Employment drives economic growth, reduces inequality, and helps build stronger, more resilient communities.

For GEM individuals, securing employment can break down barriers, open up leadership opportunities, and challenge stereotypes, paving the way for a more inclusive and equitable future. Employment plays a critical role in the representation of GEM communities by creating visibility and shaping workplace culture. When GEM individuals are employed, especially in leadership or influential roles, they bring diverse perspectives and lived experiences into the workplace, which helps shape policies and decision-making processes that reflect society’s diversity.

At our organisation, we are committed to addressing the unique challenges faced by GEM communities in accessing meaningful employment. By collaborating closely with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), we have launched initiatives such as our Back to Employment workshops. These workshops have successfully assisted 100% of participants in securing voluntary work for at least 10 hours a week, with 35% progressing to full-time employment and 60% enrolling in a business mentoring scheme.

Moreover, employment empowers GEM individuals to serve as role models, showcasing the talents and potential within their communities. This increased representation in various sectors dismantles systemic inequalities that often keep GEM individuals underrepresented. By enhancing GEM presence in the workforce, we contribute to a more accurate and comprehensive representation of these communities, both in professional settings and the broader public narrative.

We also recognise the importance of positive representation and leadership in key employment fields. It is vital that GEM individuals see role models who reflect their experiences and aspirations. Our new strategy is focused on cultivating greater visibility and leadership opportunities for GEM individuals across various sectors.

By creating opportunities for GEM individuals, we are not just facilitating employment; we are empowering them to thrive and inspire change within their communities. Together, we can build a workforce that truly reflects the rich diversity of our society and drives positive change across all sectors.
